Light Boxes

The last few days have been a photographer’s dream. I finally purchased my Canon Elan 7ECanon Elan 7E (the model with eye-controlled focus) online for $497.50, which included a nice 28-90mm lens, shipping and a 7-year warranty. It came in only a few days (instead of the 10 it was supposed to take), and was mistakenly delivered to central receiving for the university because I included my work information when purchasing the camera. After calling Fedex and finding information for myself online, the camera turned up at my office. I won’t be putting my work information on future orders.

My other big purchase was the darkroom set I mentioned in the previous entry. Beseler 23C IIHowever, I spent well over $100 on additional supplies on Friday—chemicals, lights, etc. It was certainly worth it, but my bank accounts are beginning to feel the pinch. I need a few more minor supplies and I’ll be in business.

Now, the coolest thing was acquired on Sunday night. My grandmother—or “Grammy” to those so honored to be able to call her by her real name—performed in a play on Friday night that Stacy and I attended, along with a few of my Grammy’s friends. One of those friends had a professional photographer for a grandmother, and she was still holding on to a bit of her equipment. I had brought my new camera along to the play to show Grammy, and the lady mentioned her grandmother’s equipment… and that it was mine if I wanted it! So she gave it to Grammy and we went over to pick it up last night.

For the longest time I couldn’t figure out how to open it. I finally got it today before my class, and that sucker is pretty sweet. It has a full bellows and looks like it’s probably a medium format camera. I originally thought it was large format because there are some large format parts included in the case, but I think that’s for something else. I’ll definitely hold on to the excess until I can find a good use for it… and I know I can do that.

Casey’s bachelor party was this weekend. I picked up Daniel in Austin on Friday afternoon and we headed back to San Marcos before driving 2 hours with no AC in my car. We picked up two pizzas on the way over and met up with Casey, Kristin, Nathan and Colby at Casey’s apartment. We went to Kristin’s parents house the next day to meet up with her brother, Clint, who is also in the wedding party with Nathan and me. Casey and I rode with him to Dave and Buster’s in Houston, while the rest of the guys rode in Nathan’s Jeep.

Dave and Buster’s was a lot of fun, but you can only play games for so long before getting at least a little bored. We were hungry so we headed over to a wings place and Clint bought us 100 wings. After that oh-so-healthy meal, we headed back to Dave and Buster’s and played some pool. Ryan Mo showed up at that point, and we went and played some more video games. Then we all went outside for cigars. Casey had Clint buy cigars based on each person’s personality. I’ll let someone cover what they were in the comments (ahem… Casey). Everyone enjoyed their cigars, but I abstained… and finally gave in, considering it was for Casey’s bachelor party and all. But mine wouldn’t light, and we ran out of matches. What a shame… you know I hated sucking on an unfiltered cancer stick. Still, I tried… and I guess that’s good enough. We returned to the restaurant, and Mo drove back to Beaumont (he had to work the next day), played some more games and finally headed back to College Station.

We ate lunch at Kristin’s parent’s house, and then played a little pool before Colby left for Dallas (or whatever his city is named). We went back to Casey’s apartment and Daniel’s mom picked him up on her way back from Orange. Kristin made bread, we went to Hastings, blah blah blah… I drove back to Austin and got that sweet old camera… the trip was over. And next week: Casey and Kristin’s wedding!

Comments

Alrighty, let’s see if I can remember what everyone got, and what their personalities’ were?

Walker: Loud, but a funny guy. Not afraid to speak his mind. Walker got a cigar that had a really “loud” label, if I remember correctly. It was a pretty cool case too.

Colby: The quiet one, yet when he speaks, it’s usually either insightful or hilarious. He got the same kind of cigar that Walker did, except the case was much more refined looking.

Daniel: The sarcastic, funny guy (I always think Chandler from Friends). So he got a cigar that was bigger than most tailpipes! =) Heheh, but seriously, it was huge, we had to light it in secions.

Ryan Mo: He’s a no-nonsense kind of guy. Everyone likes him because you get what you see, and that’s cool. Mo got a very simple, yet very nice cigar…we all liked it…heheh.

Nathan: Rough on the edges, very cool guy underneath. He got a cigar that was black as night….I got chills just looking at it, but he said it was a very good cigar.

Me: I just got a really nice cigar, I believe it was $12, very good cigar. I believe Clint got one like that as well.

Thanks again guys for coming to see me this weekend, you don’t know how much I enjoyed it.

I finally finished that cigar tonight. It took 6 hours to smoke it ;) Anyway, it was a good one. We’ll definitely have to do it again this weekend.

I smoked mine all the way home from Houston. Got home from work on Sunday and smoked it some more with a steak and fries. Finished the last bit of it on Monday with some hotdogs. Thank you Casey for the gift that keeps on giving, for days to come.
