On Photography, Pt. 1

Sunday, February 20, 2005 | 11:08PM

I spent a large part of the weekend working on Walker Pickering Photography. I had some (what seemed to be) minor changes that I felt needed to be made, but I never made the time to do it until Saturday night. But I finally sat down and put it all together, in addition to adding new images.

See, Beyond Monochrome is sort of like my online critique area. I place lots of current work up in hopes that some of it will actually be good enough to pursue more deeply. It just so happens that someone liked some of my current work from Town Lake, and I’ve been invited to possibly exhibit it at a gallery in Santa Fe, NM. (No final word back on that yet, btw.) I’ve also been asked to contribute a piece to the Austin Museum of Art for a charity auction, which seems like a great opportunity and idea. So it seems that this newest series is deserving of being promoted to my main photography site. It has made it through the critique. At least for now.

And speaking of photography and big news, I got a letter from the University of New Mexico yesterday. It was the big no. I won’t deny my disappointment, but I’d rather that be my first rejection letter than one of the other 3. I can’t say my hopes are too high for the others, either, but I haven’t given up. And even if I am rejected from them all, it’s simply too early in life to be devastated by something as trivial as not going back to school for 3 more years.

With all I’ve learned at my job, I’m increasingly appreciative of the fact that I’m not having to deal with homework and school projects. One of the biggest topics I’ve begun to understand is that of the technical side of photography. I know my way around most things (at least I think I do), but to really begin to understand the physics of light and lenses and film has helped tremendously. And it’s a thing I thought I wouldn’t really care to learn in depth before. And as a matter of practicality, I’ve fallen in love with prime lenses. Two years ago I would’ve taken a zoom lens (no matter the speed) over a fixed lens any day. But now that I’m often shooting in low light conditions, and that one shot really matters, I can’t risk it with an f/3.5 when I have an f/2.8 or f/1.4 available. I find the majority of my shots are even made with a 24/2.8, which is far wider and faster than any lens I own.

So thank you, first RISD, then UT and now UNM for rejecting me. The time off has been good to me. Maybe that White House thing really is what I should be focusing my attention on, after all.

Comments

hooray for updates, your possible showing, and your asking to be a contributor for the auction =) Sorry to hear about the letter, but it seems that you’ll be able to make the best of out whatever happens, and knowing you, I’m confident that you will be able to!
