Stacy and I went skating with our friends Robert and Amy tonight. I work with Robert up at the House of Representatives. Yeah, that’s right, we went skating. I haven’t been to a skating rink since intermediate school. And it really wasn’t much different than ol’ Spinnin’ Wheels in Orange. What a surprise… Spinnin’ Wheels doesn’t have a web site. So I had been wanting to do this for awhile. I really don’t know why. But Robert and Amy agreed to it, so we made plans to go eat and then skate. See, this is a big step up from something like date night (not that we’ve gotten to the point where we need that yet anyway) because it involves actual physical activity. Our next step will be climbing the giant rock walls at Main Event down on Hwy 183. And see, I’ve figured out (and maybe I said this before) that while I hate having to work out, I don’t mind a little physical labor if I’m getting something done. I don’t mind mowing the lawn and pushing around boulders in the back yard. That’s cool. But give me a treadmill and I’ll quit before working up a sweat. This kind of stuff actually gives me a chance to work off that college, what, 50? But honestly, when I look at pictures from then I’m surprised at how skinny I looked, and I remember being overweight then. Maybe it was the skating from the years before. That and the marching band. Speaking of which, I’ve been considering doing a series on one of the band programs here locally. A few of the best high school bands in the state are very close, but I don’t know that that’s the angle I want. This entry just reeks of nerd. My job might be up on October 1st, which was expected as it was only a session job lasting for a year. That means I’ve been on the lookout for another job just in case. Something showed up for another state agency, and it pays considerably more than I’m getting now (which isn’t hard. I could wait tables and make more money in a year.) But if I were to get this other job, I’d be able to fly to Salt Lake City and learn wet plate collodion from Quinn Jacobson. It’s going to cost a pretty penny, but I’ve been dying to learn this process for such a long time now. Other things I’m spending money on soon:
I’m going to sell some other cameras to pay for the Hasselblad, and the money for The Meeting Place came from some printing I did for Bill Wittliff. In other news, we’re probably moving soon. It’ll be the first time Stacy’s moved closer to Austin in 5 years. Every year she moved further from downtown. But Cedar Park is just too far for me now. I can’t stand the traffic anymore, and most of it is actually in Cedar Park anyway. I love this house and area, but it doesn’t matter. We’ll probably be moving to something a bit smaller and older, but we’ll most likely still have 3 bedrooms, so you can still come visit. That’s right, we like company. Oh yeah, I added a picture to the colophon of BeyondMonochrome finally. I mention that here because no one would ever notice otherwise. That’s me working at the Capitol. Important, eh? CommentsWalker!! If you want some good pics of bands…check out Westlake! I might be a little biased though :) Melissa Sekel | Wednesday, August 17, 2005 | 12:32AM All Content © Walker Pickering |
