That Wal-Mart Song

Thursday, December 22, 2005 | 2:24AM

You know the one. It’s irritatingly on every Wal-Mart commercial these days. Queen Latifah singing “I’ll be hoooooome… for the Holidays” is just a little much. And I mean that only in that I just can’t stand her voice. Her acting, on the other hand… superb. She is the best actress ever to act in the history of acting.

But anyway, we’re heading to Sugar Land Thursday afternoon, then to Orange Saturday afternoon. We’ll return on Monday evening, most likely. Should be a lot of fun, and just nice to get back East.

We found out today (officially) that our lease will end January 31st, 2006. We’d had our suspicions when realtors coming by the house said there was a bid on it. And though our property management company hasn’t been returning Stacy’s calls, we were pretty much expecting it. It would give us an opportunity to downgrade a bit and save some money to pay off a bit of debt, but we’re mainly looking at our options right now. I’d love to stay in a similarly-sized house, but it’s probably not realistic without keeping around the same amount in rent. Still, it might be something we’ll consider for just a 6 month lease.

Yes, that’s right, another round of grad school applications is underway. It probably just seems like a joke to all of you, but getting into a good graduate photography program (or any, for that matter) is hard… or at least it is for me.

My gifts to family this year, since it is a tight budget we’re working on, is photographs. Large prints done in my darkroom here at the house. So I decided to include some snapshots of the space while I was working, as well as a final print on the drying rack. You might recognize it from BeyondMonochrome a few weeks ago. I like it in print MUCH better.

The sad part is that these prints are on my final several sheets of Agfa 118, a beautiful paper that has been discontinued with the painful death of Agfa. I’m bummed because my experience of printing for Bill has really helped me get to know the qualities of this paper quite well. But I’ll be switching almost exclusively to Ilford glossy fiber-base paper for my current series.

After grad school applications, my next big thing is FotoFest 2006. I’m attending a thing called The Meeting Place, which is 4 or 6 days (I’m doing 4) of portfolio review with many many important photography people… museum curators, gallery owners, famous photographers, photography experts, etc. I’m excited, but just anxious to get my portfolio in order. It’s a lot of work to have done before March. Still, it’ll be worth it in the long run if I can pull it off. I’d like to cut back on hours at work, but it’s just not feasible.

Merry Christmas!
