Oh, Atlanta

Friday, June 16, 2006 | 5:18PM

In less than two months, our new home will be Atlanta. That’s right, after nearly 3 years of applying, I’ve finally been accepted to graduate school! I’m sure this seems kind of sad to some people, but photography MFA programs just aren’t that easy to get into these days. At least not from my perspective.

I’ll be attending Savannah College of Art & Design’s new Atlanta campus starting this fall to pursue my MFA in photography. The program is 90 hours, but SCAD runs in quarters instead of semesters, and I plan to attend year round the whole time I’m there. It’ll be weird to be back in school after two years off the horse.

A lot has happened since I first started applying for graduate schools in December of 2003:

  • I got rejected from UT and RISD (2004)
  • I graduated with my BFA in photography from Texas State University
  • I got married
  • I moved from San Marcos to Austin
  • I worked at Precision Camera & Video for a few months
  • We moved to Cedar Park, further from Austin
  • I worked as a photographer for the Texas House of Representatives for a year
  • I got rejected from University of New Mexico, Arizona State University, Columbia College in Chicago and University of Colorado (2005)
  • I started printing for Bill Wittliff
  • My work was selected for the Wittliff Permanent Collection at Texas State
  • I spent three days working at Wolf Camera in the mall (yes, an absolute all-time low)
  • I began working at Best Buy 691 as a “Digital Imaging Specialist”, which I must admit has helped me teach people about photography, believe it or not
  • I started shooting seasonally for Flash Photography, based out of Dallas, culminating in shooting 24 graduation ceremonies in May of this year alone
  • We moved further away from Austin, yet again, to the suburb of Leander
  • I got rejected from Minneapolis College of Art & Design, University of Colorado (again), and University of North Texas (but in reality, they never received my transcripts from two Lamar campuses for two summer classes taken as an undergraduate) (2006)

I can’t say that the experiences I’ve had in that time were detrimental at all. I certainly feel I’ll be a better prepared graduate student than I would have been straight out of college. As a matter of fact, if you’re a person that’s searching the internet for this type of information, I’m going to post the excel spreadsheet I made for my submission process this last time.

Fortunately our lease in Leander is up at the end of July, so we’ll be right on schedule for moving to Atlanta. It’s a 950 mile drive, so if someone wants to see our crazy faces before we go on our (at least) 2 year trek, let’s get in touch before that time.

Hey Walker, I know I said it before… I’m really happy for you. Two years may seem like a long time but I’m not at all surprised that you are starting your MFA. I look forward to seeing the talents you develop… enlarge… focus on… you know what I mean! This is too cool. Congratulations.
