La Vida Brinca

Sunday, July 16, 2006 | 3:21AM

In less than a week I’ll be in Atlanta for good. It seems when everything is coming down to the wire, everything else begins to stack up. For instance, I’m supposed to be packing everything in the entire house so Mo and I can just load it up on Thursday morning/early afternoon. But instead, I’m having to print quite a few images for Bill since he won’t have me to print for him anymore. Bill Wittliff: La Iglesia from La Vida BrincaFunny thing is, it’s this printing that he’s having me do that is the most interesting I’ve ever done for him. He’s given me the opportunity to print images from his Tragaluz work, La Vida Brinca. Prior to this, I’ve printed images from Lonesome Dove almost exclusively, which is interesting and difficult, but not nearly as exciting as the kind of dodging and burning techniques involved in the Tragaluces.

The title of the book, “La Vida Brinca” translates from Spanish as “Life Jumps”. Bill told a great story about how that title came about in a panel discussion a few months back, but I won’t tell you here because I’m hardly a storyteller. But it’s ironic to me that just before I make a major life change and move to Atlanta for grad school, I finally get the opportunity to print images from such an appropriately-titled body of work.

I’ve been in a bit of a rut photographically lately, because there’s been a distinct absence of stimuli. When I pull out a great photography book or see the work of a great photographer somewhere, it’s then that I start thinking creatively again. It’s not a stealing of ideas, just a reminder that I have it in me to create beautiful things, and I just have to pursue it… constantly.

It’s tough to remember that even the best photographers shot thousands of frames that were never published. I’ll be investing in quite a bit of film soon.

Sobrino…as one who has had more than his fair share of life jumps, enjoy the experience awaiting you. It was great to see you and Stacey again…especially since it’s about to get a lot harder to do so! Once again, there’ll be someone in the family 3 time zones away!
